If you are lookiing for Things to Do in Puerto Rico other than sand and surf, a visit to Hacienda Buena Vista should be on your agenda. Constructed in the mid-19th century the Hacienda Buena Vista, which is just north of Ponce in the Porta Caribe region, is an extraordinary example of a coffee plantation from the time when Puerto Rican coffee was one of the most sought after coffees in the world.
The original estate covered some 500 acres and produced 10,000 pounds of coffee in addition to staples such as corn, plantains and other fruits and vegetables. The Hacienda was abandoned and fell into disrepair until the Puerto Rico Conservation Trust purchased 87 acres in 1984 for the purpose of restoring the property to its original condition.
A visit to the Hacienda Buena Vista is and unforgettable educational experience that takes you back to the times when the coffee produced in the mountains of Puerto Rico was some of the finest in the world.
Several buildings including the Manor House, Stables and Coffee Mill are grouped upon a three acre site, watered by a sophisticated system of canals originating from Vives Waterfall. One of the highlights of the Hacienda Buena Vista is the hydraulic turbine of a type found nowhere else in the world.
The history of Hacienda Buena Vista is linked to the life of the Vives family, their summer residence and what today is a historical site in this area. The river and the force of its water are the main characters of a relationship between nature and agriculture mediated by slavery. Buildings and one-of-a-kind historical machinery remain from this process. Visit now and let a specialist show you the richness of this historic location.
